The 2.55 flap bag, originally known as the double flap bag but popularly renamed after its initial release date of February, 1955, is the iconic Chanel bag that most women drool over. It may surprise you, though, to learn that Coco Chanel was designing purses decades earlier than that. A French boutique owner, she created the original flap bag in the 1920s for herself because she wanted to be able to move her hands about freely while wearing a purse.

Chanel’s business was enormously successful into the 1930s, but changing fashions and political turbulence in Europe (plus her reported dalliance with the Germans, possibly even as a spy) ended her business career for nearly twenty years. She re-emerged in a big way in 1955 at the age of 71, reopening her couture house and introducing the 2.55 to the world. The French were not won over, largely because of her political history, but her fashions and handbags were huge hits in Britain and America.

The 2.55 had several notable design features including the rectangular twist lock known as the “Mademoiselle” (so named because Coco Chanel never married) and a full chain strap which resembled the key chain worn by guards at the orphanage where she once lived. The purse became a phenomenon and a highly-desired status symbol sported by celebrities and actresses around the world.

Nearly ten years after Chanel’s death, designer Karl Lagerfeld was working as creative director at the company and redesigned the 2.55; among other changes, he added the now-iconic interlocking CC clasp as a tribute to Coco Chanel and renamed the handbag the Classic Flap. It is the purse that so many of today’s women grew up visualizing as “the Chanel bag.”

In 2005, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 2.55, Chanel released a new handbag known as the Reissue 2.55. It was a full recreation of the original 2.55 (including the Mademoiselle clasp) first seen in 1955. A short time later, a redesigned Classic Flap (including the “CC” clasp) was introduced and sold under the name Timeless Classic Chanel Flap. Since then the Timeless Classic Flap and the Reissue 2.55 have been the two flagship Chanel handbags sold in boutiques and stores.
