You see them on the streets of major cities and small towns alike: people waving and twirling colorful signs boasting “WE BUY DIAMONDS!” or “HIGHEST PRICES FOR DIAMONDS!” And it’s difficult to walk along the sidewalk at a strip mall without tripping over jewelers’ display signs proclaiming “IMMEDIATE CASH FOR YOUR DIAMONDS!”
The idea of walking into a store and getting fast cash might be tempting. But if you’re like most people, a jeweler who pays high-school kids to dress up and act foolish on street corners doesn’t inspire great confidence – particularly when you’re thinking about selling valuable diamond jewelry or stones which have been in your family for decades or generations. Selling diamonds or diamond jewelry is a serious transaction and requires a serious partner, not a store so desperate for business that they use carnival barkers waving big signs.
Most communities do have serious jewelers who are willing to appraise and purchase your diamonds. But unless you’re well-versed in the nuances of valuing gemstones, or are already familiar with the general worth of your stones, you’ll probably be at a huge disadvantage when taking your diamonds to a jewelry store or pawn shop, and you’ll feel just like you do when walking into a car dealership: they have all of the information and hold all the cards.
There’s always the alternative of selling your diamonds over the Internet, because there are lots of online buyers promising the world. You might stumble on some of them in the same way that you stumble over those jewelers’ strip mall signs – in fact, some of those same jewelers make their pitches online, too. But braving the net to look for a reputable buyer can sometimes feel like diving into shark tank. Where do you even start when trying to figure out how to sell diamonds online?
Here’s what you need to know. There are sharks everywhere; sadly, they outnumber honest diamond buyers. The way to get the highest price for your diamonds or diamond jewelry, whether selling locally or online, is to find buyers who satisfy four key benchmarks:
Dimorras is proud to meet all four of those qualifications, and just as proud that our enormous worldwide clientele has trusted us to handle their diamond transactions for a long, long time. Our expert and experienced appraisers have decades of experience handling and valuing every type, color and quality of diamonds and diamond jewelry, we have such extraordinary demand from our clients for diamond pieces that we are able to offer more immediate cash than any other diamond buyer, and our caring client service is second to none. Quite honestly, that’s the type of buyer should be searching for, whether you’re looking locally or searching online.
If you’re ready to “pull the trigger,” or are even thinking seriously about selling the diamonds you’ve been holding in your collection or have inherited from a family member, we’d love to show you what it’s like to work with an honest, experienced company like Dimorras. And to give you a taste of our unparalleled service, we would be delighted to provide you with a no-obligation preliminary evaluation of your diamonds.
All we need is a description of your collection, along with copies of any previous appraisals or photos you may have – and you can submit the information in just seconds on our simple website form. You’ll have our evaluation report within days or even hours. We look forward to hearing from you.
It’s certainly possible to find qualified and reputable diamond “brick and mortar” buyers in most areas, with enough work and research. That research will probably require you to take your diamonds to neighborhoods you’d rather not visit, put a lot of unnecessary mileage on your car, and waste time sitting on your hands while jewelers and pawnbrokers deal with vendors and other customers. And after all of that time and effort, you’re likely to end up with a handful of estimates, appraisals or offers so different that you aren’t sure who to believe. You may also run into friends, neighbors or relatives who you really didn’t want to know that you were selling your diamonds.
When you sell diamonds online to an honest, reliable online dealer like Dimorras you avoid all of these difficulties. Assuming our preliminary evaluation piques your interest and you’d like a full appraisal and offer, we’ll invite you to send the loose stones or diamond jewelry to us for further inspection. That’s where the experience of our staff makes all the difference; they’re not store owners busy answering phones and dealing with salesmen, pawnbrokers who deal with everything from TVs to guns, or clerks with a loupe and a computer.
Our experts spend their entire workday appraising diamonds and other precious stones. They can honestly evaluate your collection with a full understanding of the stones and their settings, their age and condition, their history and their true worth. They also have extensive experience with unusual diamond cuts and colors, which most local jewelers are unable to properly grade.
Your precious diamonds aren’t at risk because they’re shipped directly to our secure facilities and totally insured at our expense throughout the process. Once we’ve received your collection, it has our total attention and we’ll do an expert, comprehensive appraisal for you immediately. You don’t have to go anywhere, do anything, or run into anyone you’d rather not run into; the process is completely confidential.
Here’s why our firm offer to purchase your collection will be higher than anyone else can match. We’re able to accurately grade and appraise your diamonds, when most other buyers simply make educated guesses which may be way below true value. And we have such constant demand for quality diamonds from regular buyers that we’re willing to extend further beyond appraised value than anyone else in the industry. That’s why our clientele is so large – and so loyal.
We hope to welcome you into the Dimorras family of clients.
As we’ve mentioned, there are sharks everywhere. If you’re looking around for online buyers to compare to us, avoiding those sharks will require some research and legwork. But most of it can be done from the comfort of your own home and keeping the process completely confidential.
Here’s how to sell diamonds online.
Many people have diamond jewelry collections that they believe are worth a lot of money. Some are relying on certified appraisals which have been done in the past, listing the grades of each stone and the specifics of each piece as well as their value at the time of inspection. Others are going on less reliable information, such as what their grandmother told them a ring was worth or what they paid for a beautiful piece they bought at a discount jewelry store. Some just figure that diamonds are always worth big bucks.
Attorneys who question witnesses in court have a saying: “Don’t ask a question unless you already know the answer.” That’s also good advice for selling items like diamond jewelry to an online buyer you don’t trust; you should always have an approximate idea of what your collection is worth before you ask for offers. Otherwise, if you have a piece that isn’t worth much you’ll be insulted and angry when you receive an honest offer, and if you have a valuable item you could be just a “mark” to an unscrupulous buyer who will try to take advantage of you.
That poses a problem, if you’re not using a company with a reputation for honesty like ours: how to sell diamonds online when you aren’t sure what they’re worth in the first place. The answer is to get an in-person appraisal – but not from someone who buys diamonds. Find a qualified appraiser (ideally with a GIA degree) who doesn’t sell or buy gemstones, and pay for an expert opinion on your collection. Armed with that information, you’ll be able to know whether an online buyer is giving you an honest appraisal and offer, or just trying to rip you off.
Can’t afford that? The alternative is to visit several jewelers for free appraisals to gather information, but only if you first promise yourself not to sell. You’re can always go back to a jeweler later if he offered you a price you can’t beat elsewhere; right now, you’re just educating yourself so you can have a realistic idea of what your diamonds are worth.
“1.01 round brilliant cut, H/VS1/Excellent.”
Do you know what that means, and what it means for the value of a diamond? If not, you should spend a little time educating yourself on the “4 C’s” of diamond grading – carat, cut, color and clarity – before deciding whether to accept an offer for a loose diamond or set stone. You don’t have to become an expert on diamond grading or buy your own loupe, but you should at least understand the terminology so that you’re speaking the same language as the buyer.
Craigslist, eBay and other sites where people can buy and sell personal goods are terrific places to find DVDs, books and toys. They’re a haven for scam artists, though, when it comes to high-priced items. Not only do you run the risk of being cheated by an unscrupulous, anonymous buyer without any recourse whatsoever, you even run the risk of physical danger when you’re meeting a stranger to trade a valuable diamond for cash. There are several reasons why buyers like this might be “working” on Craigslist and not at reputable stores, and most of those reasons aren’t good ones.
A common online scam is for businesses to set up fake “review” sites for services or products, and then give their own service a glowing review. A site “reviewing” online jewelry buyers should set off warning bells in your head. After all, do you really think someone is going to sell their valuable jewelry to a number of online buyers just to be able to review them – or that someone who is a serious jewelry collector is going to bother to set up a “review” site?
A similar scam sees buyers placing positive “reviews” of their own service on sites where anyone can add anonymous reviews, like Google+ or Yelp. By all means, take a look to see what people are saying, but don’t risk your valuable collection by viewing these types of comments as gospel.
Would you buy a house or a car from an online “business” claiming to have been in operation for years, yet insists on only communicating by email? Or would that behavior raise suspicions? You should exercise the same amount of caution when dealing with on online jewelry buyer interested in your diamond jewelry or loose stones; a valuable collection might not usually be worth as much as a house, but certainly could be worth more than a car. Anyone who deals at that price level isn’t afraid of speaking by phone – or afraid of giving references that you can check before committing to working with them.
Similarly, real businesses don’t use PayPal as their primary method of payment unless it’s at the client’s request. It’s easy for an experienced scammer to send fake emails notifying you that money has been deposited into your PayPal account in order to get you to part with your diamond jewelry. Legitimate online diamond buyers will be able to wire funds directly into your bank account or send certified checks.
You should also beware of buyers who make “firm” offers before seeing your collection, or don’t pay to fully insure your collection before you send it for appraisal. No honest dealer will make a firm offer without an eyes-on appraisal, and any honest and trustworthy company will insure your pieces as a good-faith gesture at their own expense.
Finally, remember that you hold all the power in the transaction; after all, it’s your jewelry. Trust your gut. You’ve undoubtedly dealt with both honest and not-so-honest businesses for years, and can tell the difference. If something doesn’t seem “right” to you, walk (or surf) away and find a different buyer you can trust.
Dimorras is a real business, with a real staff of experts able to value your diamond jewelry collection at its true worth and offer more than any other legitimate buyer. We’ve worked diligently to establish a reputation for honesty and client service, and we will be pleased to work with you in any way that makes you feel comfortable. We hope you’ll contact us whenever you’re ready to sell diamonds online.
